Nkandla - KwaNxamalala resident Nompumelelo Shezi, 26, had one mission in mind on Wednesday – and that was to speak to President Jacob Zuma.

Shezi was hoping to catch her moment with Zuma at the Ntolwane Primary School where he was expected to vote in the 2016 local government election in KwaZulu-Natal on Wednesday.

"I want to see Zuma, I had an appointment with him and we spoke and he referred me to his PA and we have not been able to talk properly," said Shezi, who asked not to be photographed.

The woman, who sells goods at a local community hall, said she had spoken to Zuma about getting her driver’s licence.

"I'm going to try and speak to him today. We spoke about licencing, he said he would help me and that I should speak to the PA."

Spotting one of Zuma's bodyguards who was at the voting station, Shezi had an idea that maybe he could assist her.

When she arrived at 08:15 to vote, she was not yet sure who she was gong to vote for.

"I don't know who to vote for, I will see when I get there."

Shezi was one of 1 674 people that were expected to vote at the school.

Within the first hour, 61 people had voted.

There was a large police presence ahead of 10:00, when Zuma was expected to vote.

KwaNxamalala, the village where Zuma's homestead was located, is an ANC ward but the Nkandla Municipality, which falls under Uthungulu District Municipality, was governed by the IFP.

The municipality was recently renamed King Cetshwayo District Municipality.
